Here are the new graphic novels and comics collections I’m most looking forward to that come out in May!
The Secret to Superhuman Strength – Alison Bechdel
Release Date – May 4th
The latest from esteemed cartoonist Alison Bechdel, The Secret to Superhuman Strength is set to explore Bechdel’s passion for exercise and fitness. This obsession will be used to help frame Bechdel’s life and look back on the myriad exercise trends that have taken the world by storm over the last several decades.
WYND Book One – James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas
Release Date – May 5th
The first volume of WYND collects the first six issues in the series from James Tynion IV (writer) and Michael Dialynas (art). The titular character has been hiding a secret about their heritage in a fantasy town. The series sounds sure to promise some grand fantasy adventures. While Tynion is sometimes hit or miss for me with creator owned work, I’m really looking forward to WYND.
Barbalien: Red Planet – Jeff Lemire, Tate Brombal, Gabriel Hernández Walta, Jordie Bellaire, and Aditya Bidikar
Release Date – May 11th
Barbalien: Red Planet collects issues 1-5 of the series spinning off of Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer universe. The book is co-written by Lemire and Tate Brombal with Walta on pencils. I’ve actually already read this one, but I wanted to include it because I enjoyed it quite a bit. As much as it is a superhero story, it’s almost more focused on the lives of the LGBTQ+ community during the height of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. It mostly eschews action for a deep Barbalien character study and it was a good change of pace for the Black Hammer universe.
We Only Find Them When They’re Dead, Vol. 1 – Al Ewing and Simone Di Meo
Release Date – May 11th
I’ve really been looking forward to this one. Al Ewing has been on a tear at Marvel the last several years with his runs on Immortal Hulk and Guardians of the Galaxy. Ewing has paired up with Simone Di Meo for a comic about a universe where survival is dependent on harvesting resources from the corpses of long-dead alien gods. I’m in! This sounds like the kind of book that will be right up my alley and I’m hopeful Ewing can continue his hot streak.
Home Sick Pilots, Vol. 1 – Dan Watters and Caspar Wijngaard
Release Date – May 19th
I’m just going to post the publisher summary from the Comixology page for this one: “In the summer of 1994, a haunted house walks across California. Inside is Ami, lead singer of a high school punk band—who’s been missing for weeks. How did she get there? What do these ghosts want? And does this mean the band has to break up?”
I’ve heard good things about Home Sick Pilots and it sounds like just the kind of crazy blend of genres and interests that have borne many a good comics series. Can’t wait to dig in.
Those are just some of the many, many great new comics that are coming out in May. What are you looking forward to?
